Blue Mountain Christian University’s Epic 15-Minute Comeback
BMCU’s Toppers opened SSAC play with a rocky start, limping through the first 65 minutes with a 2-0 deficit. Brewton-Parker quickly suffered a reversal of fortunes when the Toppers went on an electrifying 15-minute tear, securing a 3-2 victory.
The Barons struck first, netting the lone goal of the first half at the 44-minute mark. Both teams were at a stalemate until the Barons broke through the Toppers’ defenses, doubling their lead in the 74th minute. For most teams, a 2-0 lead at the 74th minute would be a death knell, but the Toppers immediately, miraculously rallied. A mere one minute later, center back Pedro Pina sparked hope in the stands with a stunning bicycle kick to cut the deficit in half.
Now playing with all the grit of a team down 2-1, the Toppers rode Pina’s momentum. Clearly the Barons were feeling the pressure, because in the 88th minute the Barons suffered a disastrous own goal, bringing the match level at 2-2. With bated breath, BMCU fans watched winger Kida Yamaguchi’s corner kick find Pina, who delivered his second goal of the night with just 25 seconds left on the clock.
The Barons had no time to respond as the final whistle sounded, securing a hard-fought 3-2 victory for BMCU. It was an incredible display of resilience by the Toppers, who now turn their focus to Saturday’s home match against the Thomas University Nighthawks.
