Choctaws Defeat No. 12 Statesmen In Historic Sweep
Mississippi College closed out its regular season with a dominant sweep over the 12th-ranked Delta State Statesmen, who clinched the 2025 Gulf South regular season title, by a combined score of 40-7.
Game One
The series opened on Friday night where the Choctaws made a comeback from an early deficit to take down the Statesmen 7-4. The win marked the first victory over a ranked opponent since March 9, 2024 when they defeated No. 8 West Florida.
The Statesmen claimed an early lead when Dylan Dendy notched a three-run homer in the top of the first frame, but the Choctaws immediately responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the first.
After four scoreless innings, MC’s Blaise Breerwood launched a three-run homer off Delta State’s ace Drake Fontenot (9-1), which gave him his first loss of the season. Jordan Evans added to the lead in the seventh inning with a solo home run as well.
Delta State notched only two hits after the first inning, one being a solo home run from Dylan Coleman in the eighth, but the Choctaws were able to hold on for the series-opening victory.
Game Two
Saturday included a doubleheader to close out the series between the two teams, and Mississippi College clinched the series with a 10-2 win in the opener. Jordan Evans and J.T. Vance each recorded a home run, and Caleb Peterson came away with eight strikeouts over six innings to carry the Choctaw’s momentum. Korey Cooper then gave the team a cushion with a three-run shot in the eighth frame.
Game Three
MC completed the sweep in game three with a whopping 23-1 victory, recording 21 hits in the process. The 23 runs are good for the second most this season for the Choctaws, behind only their 24-8 run victory over Christian Brothers on April 4.
J.T. Vance was arguably the star of the game for MC, tallying a 4-for-4 hitting performance with six RBIs. Vance notched a two-run home run as well as a two-run triple in the game. The triple moved him into the top 5 for most in school history.
Mississippi College earned its eighth 30-plus win season in program history, and they will be the four seed leading into the Gulf South Conference Tournament, beginning on Friday, May 2 in Oxford, Alabama.
