Domination: MSU Players Have to Play Each Other in Tournament Final
Claiming first and second place, MSU’s Benito Sanchez Martinez and Niccolo Baroni beat out all competitors to claim their spots in the finals this past weekend in Arkansas’s Fayetteville 15K tournament.
Martinez claimed the first ITF tournament victory of his career on Sunday. Coming in first place, the Junior from Germany defeated his ‘opponent’, Freshman teammate Niccolo Baroni. The main draw final score was:
Benito Sanchez Martinez (MSU / Germany) def. Niccolo Baroni (MSU / Italy): 6-2, 6-2
With absolute domination, the Bulldogs not only secured first and second, but had two other players who advanced to the semifinal and quarterfinal level.
A total of four Bulldogs traveled to Arkansas to compete in the six-day long tournament and all players were successful in their own right. In addition to Sanchez Martinez and Baroni, the Bulldogs had Mario Martinez Serrano and Petar Jovanovic advance quite far in their singles matchups. Martinez Serrano advanced to the semi-final round and Jovanovic advanced to the quarterfinal round.
In doubles, Baroni and Martinez Serrano also secured a quarterfinals finish in doubles alongside Jovanovic and Sanchez Martinez, who advanced to the semifinals.
These results show Mississippi State men’s tennis team is a force to be reckoned with. The official season begins in the Spring, so keep an eye on the team who plays so impressively, they have to play each other in the finals.
