EMCC Rodeo Competitors Wrangle Championship Spots
East Mississippi Community College’s men’s team earned a fifth-place finish overall during last Saturday’s UAM Weevil Stampede. They walked away with 255 points, powered by strong performances from Arkansas natives Sanders McElroy and Carson Powell.
McElroy joined his brother, Scout McElroy of Southern Arkansas University, to claim runner-up honors in team roping. The duo posted consistent runs of 6.7 and 6.0 seconds for an aggregate 12.7-second time, just half a second shy of first place. Each rider collected 160 points in the event.
Powell delivered a powerful performance in steer wrestling, clinching a third-place finish with runs of 5.7 and 6.6 seconds. He maintained his Ozark Region lead in the event, now totaling 375 points for the season. Powell also reached the championship round in tie-down roping but narrowly missed a spot on the leaderboard.
EMCC advanced two other team roping pairs to the short round: Dylan Jones (Lena, Miss.) and Colton Mewbourn (Mathiston, Miss.), along with Hayden Barnett (Calhoun City, Miss.) and Keylee Zancanella (Aurora, S.D.). Each posted first-round times but did not record times during the second round.
Under head coach Morgan Goodrich, the Lions will wrap up their fall season next month at the 50th Annual MSU Racer Roundup, set for Nov. 20–22 at Murray State University.
