MGCCC’s Matthew Hinton Dominating JuCo Basketball
Matthew Hinton is a powerhouse forward for Mississippi Gulf Coast. As a freshman, Hinton (Atlanta, Ga./Dutchtown) appeared in 28 games, averaging 6.0 points and 4.0 rebounds per contest. He scored in double figures 5 times, highlighted by a 20-point performance in a 111–87 win over Piney Woods Post-Grad and a 10-rebound outing in an 87–57 victory over the Louisiana Knights.
This season, Hinton has continued to sharpen his skills, culminating in a breakout performance in MGCCC’s most recent game. Hinton narrowly missed a triple-double and was clutch down the stretch to lead Mississippi Gulf Coast to an 86-81 overtime win over Delgado in New Orleans on Tuesday.
“Matthew had the best game of his career,” Bulldogs coach Owen Miller said in a press release. “He had 24 points, 12 rebounds and eight blocks and really dominated a game on both ends, especially defensively.”
Hinton anchored the Bulldogs, finishing with 8 offensive rebounds and scoring the final 6 points of regulation, including a pair of free throws with 79 seconds left to get Gulf Coast within 2. His dunk with 39 seconds left made it 74-74, sending the game to OT.
Now firmly on the radar as a player to watch, Hinton has helped propel Mississippi Gulf Coast to a 12–2 start, positioning him as one of the program’s keystone players.
