Mo Williams To Be Elected into Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame
The Class of 2025 will be inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame on August 1-2 during the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame Induction Weekend, and Jackson State Basketball Head Coach Mo Williams will be one of the greats inducted.
Williams just finished his third year coaching for the Tigers after coaching for two years at Alabama State. Prior to arriving in Jackson, he was a basketball star himself. After being a standout at Murrah High School, Williams played at the University of Alabama for two seasons before being drafted by the Utah Jazz with the 47th overall pick of the 2003 NBA Draft.
Williams had a long, 13-year NBA career where he averaged 13.2 points, 4.9 assists and 2.8 rebounds for seven different teams in the association. In the 2008-09 season, Williams made the All Star team while playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers, averaging 17.8 points that season.
While making the NBA is a huge accomplishment in itself that many people dream of, being an All Star as well is even more remarkable. Williams would play his final season in 2015-16 with the Cavs where they went on an iconic run, winning the NBA Finals in a 3-1 comeback over the 73-9 Golden State Warriors, led by Hall of Famer LeBron James.
After retiring, he would take a head coaching job at Alabama State basketball from 2020-22. That brings him to where he is now in Jackson State. He will be inducted to the 2025 class along with Scott Berry, Steve Freeman, Mike Justice, Dexter McCluster, Derrick Nix, Steve Rives and Robbie Webb.
