NFL Star, Terrell Buckley, Named Head Football Coach at Mississippi Valley State University
Mississippi Valley State University (MVSU) has officially named Terrell Buckley as the 19th head football coach of the Delta Devils. A former NFL Pro Bowl cornerback and respected collegiate coach, Buckley brings a wealth of experience and passion for the game to his new role.
A standout player at Florida State University, Buckley was a two-time All-American and winner of the prestigious Jim Thorpe Award in 1991, recognizing him as the nation’s top cornerback. He finished his college career with a record-setting 21 interceptions and 501 interception return yards, an NCAA mark that still stands today. Buckley’s impressive play earned him a first-round selection in the 1992 NFL Draft, where the Green Bay Packers picked him with the fifth overall pick.
Buckley played for several NFL teams over his 14-year career, including the Green Bay Packers, Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, and New York Jets. He was part of the Patriots’ Super Bowl XXVI-winning team and secured a championship ring after a memorable AFC Championship win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2001.
The Super Bowl champion transitioned to coaching. Buckley has gained experience coaching at Florida State, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, and most recently as the head coach of the Orlando Guardians in the XFL. Known for his leadership and ability to develop talent, Buckley is eager to bring that same energy to MVSU, a program with a rich football history that has produced legends like NFL Hall of Famer Deacon Jones and Jerry Rice.
“I am Mississippi Made! I have dreamed of being a head coach in the state of Mississippi,” said Buckley. “This is a family thing. We are stronger together. Embracing change and hard work never ever fails.”
MVSU President Dr. Jerryl Briggs, Sr. expressed strong support for Buckley’s appointment, emphasizing the university’s commitment to revitalizing the football program. Interim Athletic Director George Ivory echoed that excitement, highlighting Buckley’s impressive resume and leadership potential.
With Buckley at the helm, the Delta Devils are poised for an exciting new chapter as they aim to build a competitive program and attract top-tier talent. Fans, alumni, and supporters are already buzzing with anticipation for the upcoming season.
