No. 1 Ranked Bulldogs Look to Defend NJCAA Gulf Title

Today marks a three-day postseason event as the top-ranked Mississippi Gulf Coast Bulldogs hope to defend their NJCAA Gulf District Championship title at the Tunica National Golf Club.

Gulf Coast has won 15 of the last 16 region/district tournaments dating back to 2008. The team is also riding a four-year win streak. Gulf Coast Coach Brad Thornton described the team’s approach to the tournament.

“It’s much more similar to the national tournament with a lot of golf to be played,” coach Thornton said. “It’s a lot more to do your mental approach to it because obviously physically you’re not gonna play perfect golf for 54 straight holes. A good start is not as good, and a slow start is not as bad. It’s all about focusing on course management and staying patient.

MGCCC is coming off a win in last week’s MACCC championship by three shots in Corinth, with Ludvig Behring becoming the fourth different Bulldog to win a tournament this year.

The team arrived in Tunica on Saturday, and coach is satisfied with the team’s overall preparation for the tournament.

“We’re still working hard trying to clean up a few things,” Thornton noted. “I’m really proud of our effort so gar and excited to see what this week holds especially over 54 holes.”

The pool consists of seven teams including the Bulldogs, and the No. 1 ranked MGCCC squad seeks to defend their title from last season.
