The Importance of Rivalry: Jones vs. Pearl River’s ‘Catfight’

A good sports rivalry is what keeps the world spinning. Here in Mississippi, there are multiple rivalries that get everyone riled up. Tonight, Jones College and Pearl River Community College face off in their annual ‘Catfight’ rivalry. The two teams have been dancing in this rivalry for close to 100 years. Jones (the Bobcats) and Pearl River (the Wildcats) face their annual 94th “Catfight” today at 7 p.m.

The ‘Catfight’ rivalry stems from the school’s proximity and mascot similarity. The name pays homage to both schools feline mascots and the college’s are a little under an hour drive apart.

This year, Jones College has a lot on the line while Pearl River has a lot to prove. The Bobcats lead the series 49-42-2 and have won seven straight in the series. However, this catfight is taking place at Pearl River. With a home field advantage and a seven year losing streak, Pearl River will put their all on the field tonight.

Another exciting element to this matchup is these teams have the same record. The Bobcats are 4-4 overall and 2-3 in the MACCC South Division and the Wildcats are also 4-4 and 2-3.

The game will air on jcbobcats.com with Mark Easley and Chuck Robertson on the call.

Happy Halloween!
