What We’re Watching: Saturday’s SEC Showdown

Mississippi State (10-7) and Ole Miss (10-7) will meet this Saturday in a sold-out Humphrey Coliseum. Both teams hold the same records and seem to be evenly matched, with even veteran sports writers unable to make high-confidence predictions about the game.

Along with matching loss records, both teams have built formidable defensive plays that have most analysts predicting a nail biter.

Ole Miss has leaned heavily on defense under controversial head coach Chris Beard, who came to the school after being fired by the Texas Longhorns. It’s been nearly three years under Beard’s regime, and Ole Miss has held opponents to 60 points or less in five games this season, allowing an average of just 64.5 per contest, the 29th-fewest in the NCAA.

Mississippi State is fresh off of a demoralizing loss against Auburn. But, Mississippi State’s only losses this season were to teams that went off offensively, which is not characteristic of Ole Miss’ playing style. State will also have home-court advantage and is better suited to gearing down and getting into a half-court game if needed.

If Mississippi State can outmaneuver Ole Miss’s defense and win the rebounding battle, the Bulldogs put themselves in position to protect home court. But if Ole Miss forces mistakes, their defense can take over late.
