William Carey Golf Has Huge Comeback in Championships
No. 15 William Carey mounted an incredible comeback, erasing a twelve-shot deficit over the final two rounds of the 2025 SSAC Women’s Golf Championship to secure their second straight SSAC title, edging out No. 4 Dalton State in a dramatic playoff. The team displayed resilience and composure under pressure, rallying when it mattered most. Their victory not only marks a back-to-back championship run but also cements their reputation as a rising powerhouse in collegiate golf.
Carey, knowing they had work to do to cut the deficit, came out and shot their best round of the tournament with a team total of 300 in the second round. The eleven-stroke improvement allowed them to cut Dalton’s lead to just eight heading into the final round.
As the temperature climbed on the final day of the 2025 SSAC Women’s Golf Championship, so did the intensity of the showdown between the Roadrunners and the Lady Crusaders. William Carey steadily chipped away at Dalton State’s eight-shot lead, eventually pulling even as both teams exchanged the lead throughout the tense back nine. With everything on the line heading into the 18th hole, the title came down to the final pairing: Bloom for WCU and Sara Burger for DSC.
Holding a one-shot lead, Bloom stepped up first and lined up her par putt, but it came up just short, leaving the door open for Burger to clinch the title with a birdie. Burger’s putt looked true but grazed the edge of the cup and rolled past, resulting in a par and sending the championship into a playoff.
WCU’s Worawalan Siwaiyapram and DSC’s Hanna Bullard led off the playoff, both steady under pressure as they carded pars. Next up, Cooley and Nivasananda of Carey battled Tara Phipps and Tylah James, with each pair trading a birdie and a bogey to keep the playoff deadlocked.
The final groups—Bloom and Ruangrung for William Carey and Burger and Jia Kataria for Dalton State—took center stage. Bloom nearly ended it early, just missing an eagle from 35 feet and tapping in for birdie to put the pressure squarely on the Roadrunners.
Kataria followed, needing a birdie to even the score, but her putt ran past the hole, leaving her with par and giving WCU a slight edge.
The championship then hinged on Ruangrung and Burger, each facing par putts. Ruangrung calmly drained her five-footer, sealing the comeback and rendering Burger’s attempt irrelevant. With that clutch finish, William Carey secured the SSAC title in dramatic fashion.
The win earns WCU an automatic bid to the NAIA Women’s Golf National Championship, set for May 13–16 at Eagle Crest Golf Club in Ypsilanti, Michigan.
