Alcorn’s Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite Made Parade History
Alcorn State University’s Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite made history with their trailblazing performance in the 99th Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, marking the band’s first appearance on this iconic international stage. As the university shared, “the world witnessed the excellence of the Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite and the World Renowned Golden Girls in New York City.”
The band’s achievement reflects decades of dedication and tradition. Its origins date back to 1885 with a newly formed brass band, which navigated the challenges of social change, segregation, and war to evolve into one of the nation’s most recognized HBCU marching bands. In 1969, under Samuel S. Griffin’s leadership, the program adopted the name “Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite,” to “catch the public’s attention.”
The parade performance brought Alcorn to millions: an estimated “3.5 million spectators along the route and more than 50 million viewers worldwide” had the chance to witness the band’s artistry. It was, as the university noted, “more than just a performance; it was a priceless opportunity for our students to showcase their talent on a global scale.” By “representing Mississippi and the excellence of HBCU culture,” the Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite elevated the university’s national profile. Reflecting on the accomplishment, the university celebrated: “We are incredibly proud of our students, directors, and staff for their dedication. You have shown the world what it means to be a Brave!”
Community and alumni support were instrumental in making this milestone possible. Alcorn surpassed its fundraising goal, with $571,200 raised (the original goal was $500,000) from nearly 3,000 donors. Community backing ensured students could travel, perform, and represent the university during this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
