Biloxi Breakers: A New Era of Hockey on the Gulf Coast

After a carousel of coaches and a rebrand (you may have known them as the Sea Wolves), the Biloxi Breakers are back with high hopes. Despite a mixed record, the Breakers are committed to doing the near-impossible: building an all-star team from the ground up.

 New Name, New Identity

In June 2025, the team unveiled its new branding as the Biloxi Breakers, leaning into the coastal energy of their Gulfport home. The new identity was selected after a fan vote, and all names were fan-nominated. Given the team’s dedication to their fans and the Mississippi community at large, their choice to collaborate with fans is expected.

On the change, a Biloxi Breakers press release described the Breakers as “born from the waves and built to crash, delivering energy, force and impact on the ice […] the Biloxi Breakers represent the fierce power of the Gulf. This rebrand reflects Southern grit and Coastal pride that are a part of the unique culture and energy of our loyal fan base.”

All of these changes haven’t changed the Breakers’ status as a proud member of the Federal Prospects Hockey League (FPHL). The FPHL is a single A minor professional hockey league and is currently in its 16th season.

New Coach, New Management

Guiding the Breakers on the ice is Charlie Pens Jr., recently appointed as head coach and Director of Hockey Operations. Pens is the 7th coach in five years, but the first under the Breakers’ new management.

Pens has over 300 professional games as a player and coach. He hung his skates up after the 2022-2023 season, as Captain of the Watertown Wolves, to pursue a coaching and hockey development career.

In a statement to the media, Pens expressed his excitement at joining the Breakers staff: “I am extremely grateful to the ownership for the opportunity to bring a high scoring, hard nosed team to the Coliseum. I want it to be the hardest place to play in the league. It’s been a few tough seasons here but that is over now. Biloxi is going to be the place that everyone wants to play. The fans need to start getting excited. We are gonna give you something to cheer for and fully support. I hope to meet you all very soon. Go Breakers!”

FPHL Attention

Among the Breakers’ bright spots is Khaden Henry, a forward rookie from Omemee, Ontario. Named the league’s Rookie of the Month for October/November, Henry has emerged as a scoring force early in the campaign. At the time of FPHL’s decision to name him Rookie of the Month, Henry had appeared in 15 games and had recorded a jaw-dropping15 goals, 15 assists for 30 points during October and November. His best two games were on November 8th against Baton Rouge with 3 goals and 3 assists for 6 points and one week later against Columbus (3-2-5).

His impact has been critical for a team that, as of the latest reported stats, averages 3.9 goals per game, has a goal differential of –26, and maintains a power play rate of 22% alongside a penalty kill of 74%. These numbers reflect the mix of the team’s offensive potential and weaker defensive areas.

Challenges, Opportunities

While excitement and fan buy-in is high, the Breakers still face real challenges. Their –26 goal differential and penalty kill at 74% suggest defensive lapses and potential player inconsistency. The team’s ability to execute under pressure will be critical to future success.

Yet with a high-powered offense led by Henry, and a stable coaching staff, the Breakers seem to finally have the tools to close the gap.

Off the Ice

Off the ice, the Breakers have doubled down on community involvement. In July, the Breakers reassured fans that Hook, the iconic mascot from the Seawolves era, will officially stay on with the team as the Guardian of the Beach. Charged with more than the typical endearing mascot-led shenanigans, Hook is the face of a brand-new community initiative: Hooked on Learning.

Hooked on Learning is a school outreach program designed to promote reading and leadership skills. When not on the ice, Hook will visit schools across the region, “bringing energy, encouragement, and a message that goes far beyond the ice.” Schools interested in booking a visit from Hook can email Maria Barr at mbarr@biloxibreakers.net.

Ride the Wave

The Biloxi Breakers are in many ways a Mississippi team. With a strong fan base that doesn’t shy away from tough seasons, the Breakers are woven into Gulfport’s (and the wider Gulf Coast’s) sports scene. If you want to get in on the ground floor of an FPHL upstart, there’s no better time than now to follow the Breakers as they head into the 2026 portion of their season.
