Bobcats Stun Aggies to Advance to CWS Semifinals

Jones Softball has been on a roll in the NJCAA Division II Softball World Series, and the momentum continued as they took down 2nd-seeded Murray State (Oklahoma) in a tough 1-0 battle.

Jayden Sawyer pitched a fantastic game and her defense did a great job of backing her up throughout the contest. The only run of the game was scored when Claire Anderson walked and then scored on a passed ball.

Murray State held a nation-long 41-game winning streak before it was snapped by the Bobcats for their first loss since March 6, leaving them with a 61-2 overall record. On the other hand, Jones improved to 50-8, its first 50-win season since 2018.

Murray State out-hit Jones 6-3, but the Bobcats’ defense was outstanding and kept anyone from ever crossing home plate. In the final three innings, the Aggies were only able to manage two baserunners. Marlee Dampeer made a great diving play at shortstop before Jones ended the game on a pop up.

Sawyer pitched a complete-game, six-hit shutout while throwing six strikeouts and stranding six Aggies on base. Sawyer moved to 12-3 on the year and 2-0 at the tournament.

Four teams remain in the tournament. Murray State faces St. Johns River State at 4 p.m. on Friday in an elimination game. Meanwhile, Jones is currently underway in a battle with MACCC-rival Copiah-Lincoln on Signature Field. The winner advances to the national championship game where they will have to be defeated twice in a row, while the loser will face the winner between Murray State and St. Johns River State in an elimination game.
