Bulldogs Lead With One Round Remaining at Men’s Golf Championship

The first three rounds of the NJCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championship are in the books, and top-ranked Mississippi Gulf Coast has taken the lead with one final round remaining.

The Bulldogs produced their best team performance in round three, shooting 1-over during a day with challenging weather. Stanley Campbell leads all players in the tournament through three rounds with an impressive score of 6-under. Campbell and John Mark Mills both shot 3-under on the day to lead the Bulldogs. Head Coach Brad Thornton is proud of his team’s performance today.

“We played really well,” Thornton said. “The conditions are still difficult, even though we got out early this morning. It was really cold, and obviously the wind picked up… I’m unbelievably proud of our start.”

In the third round, Campbell birdied 3, 5 and 8 to make the turn at 2-under for the day. After finishing 3-under, he is the only golfer in the tournament with three rounds of below-par. Campbell is confident that he will get the job done.

“I’ve said this the whole year, I’m going to win,” Campbell said. “I’m in a really good position, and I’ve got to put my money where my mouth is.”

The sophomore Mills had a huge day to leap forward over 20 spots into the top 10. The third-golfer shot 6-over in round one and 2-over in round two before breaking out with a 3-under third round. Mills talked about his mindset going into today’s round.

“I just focused on self-confidence,” he said. “I kind of let that get low after the first two rounds. I gave myself a little cocky pep talk and told myself I’m a First-Team All-American and I’m built for situations like this. I stepped into every shot with confidence. That made a big change today.”

The fourth and final round of the NJCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championship will take place tomorrow, May 23, where there will be crowned a champion. The Bulldogs look to keep their momentum and close out their performance with a monumental win.
