Bulldogs End Season in Wyoming
After an insanely impressive and historic season, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College women’s basketball team has finished out their 2023–24 season with a loss in their national tournament.
The Bulldogs had begun their preparation for the NJCAA national tournament last week, as they had been selected as a 22nd seed to compete in this year’s national stage in Casper, Wyoming. They were up against the Three Rivers Community College from Missouri for this national title. The team earned their spot with an extremely successful season. They had gone almost undefeated in conference play and 23–4 in overall competition this season. They had won the Region 23 championship for the first time since 1977 and had an 11 game winning streak leading up to this national dance. This monumental moment for Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College took place on March 27th, but unfortunately, they were not able to win the dance. The final score was MGCCC 64, Three Rivers 73.
Despite falling short in this match, this is a massive moment for Mississippi Junior College athletics. This was MGCCC first trip to a national stage in a very long time. Although the loss may seem disappointing, it shows that Mississippi Junior College athletics are always in a fair fight to perform on a national stage. They are forced to be reckoned with, and the nation needs to look out for more of Mississippi Junior College athletics to come.
