Delta State Swim Team Competes in Thanksgiving Battle
Delta State University’s men’s swimming and diving team concluded the first day of the Thanksgiving Invite in second place, trailing behind conference rival Ouachita Baptist.
The competition kicked off yesterday with a Statemen meet record in the men’s 200-yard freestyle relay. The team, consisting of Michael Robinson, Jake Runyon, Brooks Butler, and Ethan Baylin, finished second with a time of 1:21.27. The previous Statemen record was 1:24.74. Similarly, Junior Mateus Franco secured second place in the 500-yard freestyle, recording a time of 4:26.71. This event marked the second consecutive competition in which the top three finishers surpassed the previous meet record.
The Statesmen remained competitive in the 200-yard medley relay, with four swimmers advancing to the finals. Riley Oakes finished third in another event where at least the top four competitors achieved meet records, clocking in at 1:51.86. In the 50-yard freestyle, Delta State claimed the top two spots, with Braylin and Robinson finishing closely together. Braylin completed the race in 20.30 seconds, while Robinson followed with a time of 21.04 seconds.
To close the evening, the 400-yard medley relay team, comprising Robinson, Jacob Hamblen, Kacper Mochnal, and Braylin, finished second with a meet record time of 3:20.21. The team accumulated a total of 486.5 points on the first day of competition.
The Statesmen swimmers will continue their efforts as day two of the Thanksgiving Invite begins at 10 a.m. at the Ronald G. Mayers Aquatic Center. To keep up with the swim team, click below:
