Don’t Blink: Men’s Doubles Team Claim No. 1 Spot in Nation

Remember these names: Petar Jovanovic and Benito Sanchez Martinez

Mississippi State’s Petar Jovanovic and Benito Sanchez Martinez soared to the top of college tennis, earning the No. 1 spot in the ITA preseason doubles rankings in all of college tennis on Tuesday. This duo is now the program’s fourth tandem to hold No. 1 status, and second duo to hold this spot under head coach Matt Roberts.

Petar Jovanovic and Benito Sanchez Martinez are in the likes of some favorable company, including Olympian Nuno Borges and his doubles partner Strahinja Rakic in 2018.

This is Jovanovic and Sanchez Martinez’s second year as a doubles team. Last season, the two had an impressive run, and earned their spot to compete in the ITA National Fall Championships in San Diego, California. They advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Individual Championships in Stillwater, Oklahoma back in May to obtain their All-American status, finishing the season with a 24-11 record.
