Mississippi Made: Ole Miss Kate Smith
Having pride in where you are from and playing for an in-state school is incredibly meaningful, and Ole Miss women’s soccer player Kate Smith is the first to understand this.
From Gulfport, Mississippi, Kate understands that when she represents her SEC school, she is not just wearing the red and blue colors; she is carrying the hopes and dreams of young women who share her background and experiences. Kate even says that if she could give her younger self advice, it would be, “Trust God’s plan because whenever things feel like they’re going off track, they’re not because he’s always in control.”
When asked “Why Ole Miss?”, Kate responded with, “I chose Ole Miss because I’ve grown up an Ole Miss fan my whole entire life. I’ve had several family members who have played sports here. It’s always been a dream of mine to come and play here and follow in their footsteps.” Sticking to family values, tradition, and culture all reflect Kate’s personal values, and the values of most Mississippians as a whole.
There’s a certain pride in contributing to the success of an institution that’s close to home. It’s a way of giving back to the place that shaped you, and it can be incredibly fulfilling to see your efforts positively impact the area that helped you grow. This pride and connection can drive excellence on the field and create a legacy that extends beyond your athletic career.
