Olympian Credits Mississippi State for His Success
Meet Nuno Borges, the 2024 Olympic tennis player from Mississippi State.
The Mississippi State men’s tennis program has been slept on for a while. There are multiple professional tennis players who have come out of State’s program. Today we will be focusing on 2024 Olympian Nuno Borges. During his time at Mississippi State, he played just as fiercely as he does now. He holds MSU records in nine different categories including career wins (189), led the Bulldogs to back-to-back SEC Tournament Championships in 2018 and 2019, closed his Bulldog career as the 2019 ITA National Player of the Year and ITA National Senior Player of the Year, and more.
Although there are many great tennis athletes to come from State’s program, Borges made history by being the first Mississippi State tennis player to compete in the Olympics ever. Borges was born and raised in Portugal, and he was able to represent his country in the Paris 2024 Olympics.
On an interview given by Borges to WCBI Sports, Borges stated that he was excited to play in the Olympics and, “hopes it brings a good reputation to the program because it does deserve it. I grew a lot playing those four years under Mathew Roberts… day in day out, pushing me. It is also their credit for me to be here now.”
Borges did get a win during his time in Paris, but did not medal in the competition. His journey came to an end, but plenty lies ahead for him. Literally, as I write, he is winning in the US Open (in both singles and doubles).
I will come back and update his US Open journey!
Update: He feel short in the Round of 16 against D. Medvedev in singles and to Austrailian doubles team in the Round of 16 as well.
