Jackson State Football Finishes Conference Season Undefeated
Jackson State University’s football team capped off a perfect conference campaign with an 8-0 record in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play. They have rightfully secured their position as the top team in the league and will face off against Southern University in the SWAC Championship Game on December 7th. Here’s how it happened:
The Tiger’s first conference game was against Texas Southern on September 28th, which ended with a JSU victory of 43-14. Following this, Jackson State faced off against Alabama A&M and won 45-38. Their third matchup was their first home game, where they went head-to-head with ranked No. 18 Florida A&M. Of course, the Tigers put another win in the books with a final score of 35-21. Keeping their winning streak alive, JSU defeated Bethune-Cookman with a score of 37-17. On a memorable homecoming night, Jackson State dominated their opponent at home. UAPB did not stand a chance, with this game’s final score reading 41-3. Mississippi Valley State traveled to JSU’s stadium for their sixth game, which extended JSU’s winning streak to six. Mississippi Valley State fell to the Tigers with a score of 51-14. With one of their last games being away, JSU hit the road to play Alabama State. All while lacking a home-field advantage, Jackson State pulled out a victory and won this game 16-10. The Tigers capped off their perfect regular season with a 48-10 victory over rival Alcorn State this past Saturday.
Both the players and coaches are responsible for such an outstanding season. With the Tigers moving up to No. 18 in the latest FCS poll, postseason awards have been following. Jackson State return specialist/running back Travis Terrell Jr. has been named one of 25 finalists for the Jerry Rice Award by FCS Stats Perform on Monday afternoon. Irv Mulligan has also been named a finalist for the Walter Payton Award, presented to the national offensive player of the year in Division I FCS college football. Additionally, the Tigers’ coaches have moved to No. 15 in the AFCA FCS Coaches Poll.
