Thanksgiving Tradition ‘Egg Bowl’ Moved to Black Friday

Mississippi’s biggest sports rivalry, The Egg Bowl, is the annual football game between the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) and Mississippi State University. Known for the team’s intense history of hatred for one another, the Egg Bowl is an intense competition fueled by passionate fanbases. The game has become a significant part of college football tradition in Mississippi, and it usually falls on Thanksgiving Day. This year, the rivalry game will take place on Black Friday.

The teams first played each other in 1901, and Mississippi State introduced the Golden Egg trophy in 1927. The series dates back so far that, at the time of the first matchup, both schools had different names. The first game took place on October 28, 1901, at Mississippi State. Mississippi State, then known as the Mississippi A&M College and nicknamed the Aggies, defeated Ole Miss, nicknamed the Red and Blue at that time. The Aggies (Bulldogs) dominated the early days of the series including a 13-game winning streak that spanned from 1911 to 1925. In this period, the Aggies outscored the Red and Blue by a combined 327–33. Now, Ole Miss leads the series 65–46–6 through the 2023 season.

The teams have played the game every year since 1944, making it the tenth-longest uninterrupted sports series in the United States. The tradition continues this year, with Ole Miss favored to win. Ole Miss currently ranks No. 15 after an impressive 2024 season so far. Mississippi State is having a record breaking poor year, heading into the Egg Bowl 0-7 in conference play.

The Egg Bowl remains one of the most popular rivalries in college football. There will be drama, passion, and upset moments. With bragging rights and a Golden Egg on this line, tune in on Black Friday to watch this matchup.
