Lady Crusaders Crush Faulkner, Advance to SSAC Semifinals
William Carey demolished the competition during Saturday’s SSAC quarterfinal, routing Faulkner University 7–0 at Danny Owens Field and booking a spot in next week’s semifinals.
“We put in an excellent, all-around performance today,” said head coach Danny Owens. “We talked in practice this week…about ensuring we put in a complete performance for 90 minutes and we did just that.”
Scoring twice in a mere sixty seconds, the Crusaders quickly seized control early in the first half. Alessia Navarro opened the scoring off a slick one-two with Virginia Mesa, then Lauren Entremont doubled the lead moments later with a calculated finish at the near post.
Karen Vilau tipped the scales further in William Carey’s favor, dribbling through the defense and launching an unstoppable strike over the keeper. Mesa tallied assists on all three first-half goals as Carey took a commanding lead into the break.
Even with a strong lead, the Crusaders stayed the course. Early in the second half, Argentina Estrada’s pullback set up Navarro for her second goal. Vilau added another highlight moments later, finishing off a fast break with a curling strike to the far corner.
Late goals from Maddie Davis (via Raquel Diaz’s corner) and Natoya Atkinson (from Paloma Paris) rounded out the dominant performance. Keepers Nerea Pallas Padilla and Marie Reinwald combined for the shutout.
With their latest win, William Carey advances to the SSAC semifinals in Montgomery, where they will face the winner of Point University and University of Mobile on Thursday, November 6th at 11 a.m.
