MGCCC Soccer Player Killed in Tragic Accident

Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College is mourning the loss of freshman soccer player Landon Perry, an 18-year-old from D’Iberville who was tragically killed Sunday. According to Stone County Coroner Wayne Flurry, Perry was riding an electric scooter when he was struck by a vehicle.

Flurry described the incident as a “tragic accident.”

Perry had signed with Gulf Coast earlier this year after a standout high school career at D’Iberville High School. Though his time at MGCCC was short, he had already become a deeply respected member of the Bulldog family. Coach Chris Handy, who had coached Perry at the club level for roughly four years before he arrived on campus, reflected: “Landon’s been family before he ever stepped foot on campus.”

Handy continued: “He’s a person who would speak his discipline through his faith, his play on the field, his education. He was a person who 100 percent wanted to be the very best person and player he possibly could be. I know how much his teammates loved him. I know how much his family loved him. I know the coaches loved him. He was always striving to set a good example, not just for his teammates, but for his little brother and his little brother’s friends. He’s family.”

In the wake of his death, MGCCC is offering counseling for his teammates, coaches, and staff. College President Dr. Mary S. Graham said, “Our MGCCC family is grieving the loss of a bright young life. We hold the student’s loved ones close in our thoughts and remain committed to supporting our students and employees during this difficult time.”

Athletic Director Steven Campbell added, “Our prayers go out to the Perry family. Landon was an outstanding young man, and he will always be a cherished member of the Gulf Coast family.”

Services for Landon Perry are scheduled for Saturday at Venture Church in Wiggins, with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. and the service at noon.
