Exciting developments in soccer are happening across Mississippi, and today we will be highlighting four teams that have achieved notable success in various ways. Mississippi State’s soccer team is currently ranked No. 3, William Carey is riding high on a nine-game winning streak, Pearl River holds the top spot in MACCC play, and Delta State has also made impressive strides this season.
Mississippi State: At this point, Mississippi State’s women’s team is hogging the headlines. They are hard to not write about or root for, as these underdawgs have taken the nation by storm. Previous to this season, the Bulldog’s soccer program had never seen a top 10 ranking. Now, they are not just in the top 10, but have moved up to the top 3. The No. 3 Dawgs have broken too many records to count this season. They sit with an undefeated conference play record of 7-0 and an overall record of 13-1. Their current win streak is 10 games, with their next matchup occurring against Kentucky on October 24th. The State vs. Kentucky game will be at home for the Dawgs at 6:30. With only two season games remaining, this will be the last one at home.
William Carey: William Carey’s women’s team continues to shine as well. This team has been a scoring machine, with multiple games scoring over 15 goals. In their last matchup, the final score was 26-0, which is unheard of. The team has put up 36 goals in the past three games and their opponents have put up zero. Similar to State, William Carey’s team is on a nine-game winning streak and hold a conference record of 9-1. With an outstanding offense and defense, this team is one everybody should pay more attention to.
Pearl River: Pearl River is ranked No.1 in MACCC standings with an impressive 7-0-1 record in conference play. With an overall record of 11-2-2, the team lost two back-to-back games against ranked opponents. They have not fallen short since and the team has not lost their last 11 games, with the exception of a tie against No.7 Mississippi Gulf Coast. In individual player standings, Pearl River is also home to the No. 1 ranked soccer player in the MACCC conference. With a total of 53 points (which are calculated through assists, goals, game started, and total games played) Tiago Honorio Jr. has earned first place. Pearl River’s Tiago is almost 20 points ahead of his competition, as second place accumulates only 37 points. The Wildcats had an impressive matchup against East Mississippi on October 22nd, where they won 10-1. This was their highest scoring match of the season so far, thanks to six goals scored by Tiago Honorio Jr.
Soccer in Mississippi has been bringing in a national audience because of Mississippi State. This positive attention points to schools like William Carey and Pearl River, who have also been putting on quite the performances.
