Southern Miss Has Crazy Comeback

Southern Mississippi’s Lady Eagles clinch a victory in order to advance to WNIT’s second round with odds stacked against them.

Down to only seven available players in their recent matchup against UAB, the Lady Eagles did what seemed impossible and overcame a 10 point fourth-quarter deficit.

Southern Mississippi’s women’s basketball team is no stranger to a fight. They have been fighting all season, and have gone 19–13 overall, as well as 10–8 and the Sunbelt Conference. This fighter mentality secured recent this victory and a spot in the second round. In the matchup, UAB was able to get a double digit lead, with the biggest gap being 13 points, and it seemed like the Lady Eagles were being outplayed. With multiple 10 point runs, UAB looked like they had it in the bag. However, the Golden Eagles were ready to upset them, and went on a 12 point run and held an 11 point lead with two minutes left to play. Southern Mississippi was able to put up 31 points in the fourth quarter alone. Bucket after bucket, the Southern Miss players were able to secure a 79–74 win. A comeback like this does not happen often, but when it does, it means even more when the victory is against an old C-USA rivals.

Hoping to keep this good energy going, the Lady Eagles will be playing Murray State for the second round of the WNIT.
