A Look Into the Mississippi Mud Monsters and the Frontier League
The Frontier League is a professional baseball league founded during the winter of 1992-93 and has been growing over the years. The league is an official partner but is not directly affiliated with the MLB and is considered an Independent professional baseball league. Countless players have been given opportunities to play in the MLB after showing their talent in the Frontier League.
The league itself is up to 18 teams after multiple expansions, including a new expansion for the 2025 season. The Frontier League added the Down East Bird Dawgs in Kinston, North Carolina, as well as the Mississippi Mud Monsters in Pearl, Mississippi.
The Mud Monsters are the first Mississippi team to join the Frontier League, playing in the Midwest Conference of the West Division. Originally the Mississippi Braves, who were a Double-A Minor League affiliate with the Atlanta Braves, played in Pearl before they announced a relocation to Columbus, Georgia, where they are now known as the Columbus Clingstones.
The Braves’ relocation opened up the opportunity for the Frontier League to expand into Mississippi, and that’s exactly what they did. On September 9 of 2024, the Frontier League announced an expansion team. The league reached an agreement and Trustmark Park was now home to the Mississippi Mud Monsters.
Trustmark Park is very familiar with professional baseball. Up until now, the park hosted the Mississippi Braves of the Southern League for 20 seasons. The arrival of the Mud Monsters marked the beginning of an exciting new era for baseball in Pearl.
The team’s branding was created in a unique way – the team was given a placeholder name at first, and fans were invited to vote in a “Name the Team” contest. The final three choices were the Mud Monsters, the Grits, and the Soul Shakers. The fans voted, and everything else is history.
The Frontier League 2025 season is underway as of May 8, and the Mud Monsters are 1-0 after defeating the Florence Yalls 13-2. The first game gave the fans an exciting glimpse of what to expect this season. The Mud Monsters and the Frontier League have built a fun and exciting culture for years to come!
