Gulf Coast To Begin Volleyball Season In Late August

Mississippi Gulf Coast has added a volleyball program and will begin its first season in the MACCC on August 23.

The first head coach of the new program will be Shayna Walsh, a proven successful head coach in Mississippi. Over the past three seasons, Walsh led Oak Grove High School to a 61-26 record and was named South coach in the Mississippi Association of Coaches All-Star Game in 2023.

The Bulldogs open up play in Bay Minette in a Coastal Alabama Trimatch on August 23 against Coastal Alabama-South. While playing against all of the programs in the MACCC, Gulf Coast will also face several teams from Alabama throughout the season, giving them a wide variety of competition.

“I look at the schedule every day, and I’m counting down the days,” said Coach Walsh.

There are 33 regular season matches during the 2025 season before the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament begins October 29. The top-four seeds will host the quarterfinal matches and the semifinals will be hosted by the regular season champions of the MACCC. Afterwards, the winners will face the victors from Region 22 in Alabama and compete for the Gulf South District title.

Right after the Gulf South District Title, the NJCAA Division II Volleyball Championship will take place in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on November 19-22.

With two new volleyball programs (Gulf Coast and East Central) joining the MACCC, the competition will be shaken up and create a whole new level of intensity.
