Overtime Ends in Walk-off Win for JSU
A usual softball game is seven innings long, but this past Friday, Jackson State’s softball team needed eight innings to secure their victory. In a hard matchup against the Alabama State, the Tigers were able to take home the W with an end score of 6-5.
This victory can be heavily attributed to Marie Stephens, who was responsible for a three-run home run in the bottom of eighth inning to tie the game. Initially, Jackson State was trailing behind 2–0 in the third inning. The Tigers were able to tie it at 2-2 by the sixth inning, and the tie remained through the seventh. In the first inning of overtime, Alabama State broke the tie and took a 5–2 leaded at the top of the eighth inning. Alabama State thought it was over, having a 3 run lead in overtime. The Tigers were still hungry. With two JSU players on base and a home run, Stephan’s was able to even the playing field. The walk off win was secured by the Tigers by Jackson one-out RBI double. The Tigers dug deep and fought hard to secure this victory, one that was important to help them advance in the SWAC Tournament. The Tigers 204 season is coming to an impressive close, as they are 16-8 in conference play and 31-17 overall. With a 4 game winning streak, the team plays again May 9th against Florida A&M in their third and final SWAC Tournament game.
