The W’s First W; The Owls win Golf Championship for the First Time

Mississippi University College for Women’s men’s golf team earns their first ever SLIAC championship.

Breaking program history, the Mississippi University College for Women, commonly referred to as ‘The W’, has broken records this past week. This record-breaking effort took place in St. Louis for the SLIAC championship. It took a incredible performance and 10-under-par team aggregate in the final round to secure this victory. With such a dominant performance, the Owls were five shots clear of runner up, and were able to take down the six time defending previous champion team of Webster University. The five ‘W’ golfers of the team finished up the tournament on Tuesday making it the first championship victory that this golf program has ever seen. This victory also automatically secured the team a spot in the NCAA Division III national championship tournament. This is another record breaking feet for the golf team, as it will be their first appearance in a national championship tournament.

A good team is often a product of a good coach. Head coach Benji Williams said “I am so proud of these guys” after their record breaking performance and was voted the SLIAC men’s golf coach of the year by his peers.
