Wolves Open Up Region 23 Tournament with Convincing Victory
Co-Lin’s sixth-seeded Baseball squad began Region 23 tournament play as they took down the No. 3 seed Jones Bobcats, 13-6.
Jones began the scoring in the bottom of the first frame on two run scoring base hits to jump out to a 2-0 lead early. In the very next inning, however, Co-Lin made a statement and responded with a five-run outing. Reise Thomas delivered a two-RBI double, and then Avery Griffin was walked to put the two on base. Next up, Tucker Jones delivered a three-run homer over the left field fence to give the Wolves a 5-2 lead.
In the top of the third inning, Brady White was hit by a pitch before he was forced out as Evan Holifield reached on a fielder’s choice. Holifield was then knocked in by Bradley Hanlon on an RBI single to extend the lead for the Wolves, 6-2. Jones scored one run in the bottom of the third to dig into the lead, 6-3.
The score was deadlocked at 6-3 until the seventh inning when Co-Lin notched its second five-run inning of the game. Tucker Jones hit a leadoff double before he was brought home by Trey Davidson on an RBI single. Later, White executed a sacrifice bunt which allowed Davidson to score and push the lead to 8-3.
Shortly after, the bases were loaded and Lucas Harrington was brought home when Gavin Bledsoe drew a walk to extend the lead, 9-3. Thomas would reach on an error with White scoring on the play, and then Bledsoe was able to score on a passed ball. The lead was now 11-3 for the Wolves. In the bottom half of the seventh, Jones added a run to the score to cut it to 11-4.
In the top of the ninth frame, Co-Lin added the last of its 13 runs of the contest after Holifield scored on a sacrifice fly by Bledsoe, followed by Hanlon scoring on a sacrifice fly by Thomas. The Bobcats notched just two runs in the bottom of the ninth before coming up short as the Wolves sealed the game on a flyout.
Co-Lin improves to 33-23 overall and will match up against the No. 2 seed East Central at 6 p.m. tonight at Clark/Gay Baseball Complex in Decatur.
